In recent years, the tattooed body has not only undergone a change of meaning in public perception, it was also increasingly brought into focus of humanities. This dissertation contributes to the scientific discourse with special consideration of picture theory and media studies questions concerning tattooing. The human body will, due to the tattoo, be transformed into a type of infomation carrier. The extended concept of media of Marshall McLuhan is used to declare not only the tattoo itself as a medium, but also includes its media representation and the tools used to craft a tattoo. Cultural studies regarding the semantification of the skin and its communicative dimension will be considered in the same way as new links to the iconic turn, and the growing importance of images in our society. The transformation of the body into a media carrier, by tattooing, is subject to socio-cultural change with regard to tradition and fashion as well as certain gender, cultural and regional differences. The starting point is the work Body Sign Action by Valie Export from 1970. In this work the artist deals early on with the different aspects of tattooing as a non-verbal means of communication by which personal and cultural identity can be expressed and read, as well as the human being as a sign carrier. The tattooed body transports information just like any other medium, for exmaple a book. This dissertation explores the different ways of how information on the body via tattoos as a medium can be send and read. This will be done through extensive and various examples in the field of art, everyday culture and social media, in addition to the fact that a tattoo can in itself be the only message.
